Fall Field Event 2018
The Western English Setter Club (WESC) hosted its first field event on Saturday, October 6th and Sunday, October 7th. An ESAA Hunting Dog (HD) and Hunting Dog Excellent (HDX) trial was held at the Seneca Hunt Club in Seneca, Illinois.
Ten English Setters from three states participated in this inaugural event, with several other setters and their owners learning the basics of fieldwork during the training sessions that were offered each day. The contestants were joined by several WESC members, who came out just to watch and cheer on the participants.
In addition to the thrill and excitement experienced by all of the participants, highlights of the two-day event included a third HDX pass by Claire, owned by Karen Lishinski and handled by Ray McVeigh, earning her HDX title, and a third HD pass by Icey, owned and handled by Ross Rice, earning her HD title.
The judges also gave an honorable mention to Judi Hunter’s 9-month old puppy, Twizzle, who was in the field for the first time, and the most improved setter was Kizzy, owned and handled by Mary Ann Rodgers, who was also a first time field participant. Marley, owned and handled by Mary Nowak, and Sprout, owned and handled by Cindy Rice, recorded HD passes both days and are just one pass away from their HD title.
Thanks to the generosity of WESC members Jan and Konrad Wies, a trophy was commissioned to honor the best field dog during the weekend. The judges were split on their evaluations, with Icey earning the honor on Saturday and Claire capturing top dog honors on Sunday, so the title was awarded to both
Despite less than ideal weather conditions, all of the participants and spectators had a good time and each day was capped off with a delicious luncheon, courtesy of Cindy Rice and Mary Nowak. Be sure to join us in the spring when we’ll be back in the field.
